Sloppy Joes are a good, hearty dinner for fall and winter and if you make a big batch they also make great leftovers. My problem? I don’t really like sloppy. I’m also not a big fan of recipes that use a lot of ketchup or barbecue sauce because of the amount … Continue reading
Chef’s Plate Review
For the last few months I've been subscribed to Chef's Plate, a food and recipe delivery service in Ontario. Here are my thoughts on the service.
George is located on Queen East, where executive chef Lorenzo Loseto invents modern classics with a focus on fish and seafood. The interior of George, like the food, is a mix of classic and contemporary - beautiful hardwood floors and explodes brick walls, meet modern light fixtures and furniture.
Tutto Pronto (Toronto)
One day in October I was surprised and delighted to open my email and find an invitation to a Zomato meetup. I've been posting reviews and food pics over there for a while, and happily accepted their invitation to go to Tutto Pronto for a Sicilian tasting menu and to meet some other local foodies. Tutto Pronto is located in North York, not too far away from me. The interior is cozy and welcoming, filled with treasures picked up during the travels of the owner, Anna Maria.
Southern Accent (Toronto)
Located in a beautiful brick house in Mirvish Village, Southern Accent serves up Creole cuisine and classic cocktails. My mom and I were attending a talk at Blood Hot Docs Cinema, and stopped in here for a quick dinner. We sat on their large, lovely patio which was covered in lights, hanging plants and vines.
Zee Grill (Toronto)
Phebe's Zee Grill is one of the oldest seafood restaurants in Toronto and just happens to be down the street from me, so I've had my eye on going there for some time. The space is nice, with exposed brick walls and lots of dark wood.
A while back, I went to a 5 Ways Dinner, where one of the chefs was Nick Liu. At that point he didn't have a restaurant at his own but that has now been remedied. DaiLo is his new restaurant, located near College and Bathurst. It's a cozy little pace, with a small patio and beautiful Cantonese decor.
North 44 (Toronto)
North 44 is located in a large, stylish space on Yonge Street in Toronto. The restaurant was opened by Mark McEwan and Sash Simpson serves as the executive chef. It's been on my list of restaurants to try for a while, and since it's in my neighborhood, I figured it was finally time to give it a try.
There are 16 home cooks left and it’s time for another Mystery Box challenge. I always like these. The cooks lift their boxes to reveal a whole lot of canned food. Making things more challenging is the fact that all the labels have been removed, so they won’t know what’s … Continue reading
Well, I got lazy and didn’t recap the last two episodes of MasterChef. But, I’m back at it this week! And so are the home cooks as they face the second team challenge of the competition. This week they took on catering a beach wedding. The theme for the dinner is … Continue reading
The fifth season of MasterChef US premiered last week. I wasn’t planning on writing a recap of the premiere since I find the early audition episodes quite boring – they are super melodramatic and way too full of tears and schlocky sentiment. More time is eaten up by previews of … Continue reading
Banana bread is one of my favourite things to bake. It’s really easy and it makes a great snack, dessert, or breakfast. I usually intend for it to be my breakfast at work for a few mornings when I make it, though the loaf usually doesn’t last very long at … Continue reading
Inn on the Twenty is located in Jordan, Ontario, right in the heart of the Twenty Valley wine country. The area includes the Inn, a spa, a restaurant and the Cave Spring Cellars tasting room. I had heard nothing but good things about the restaurant and on Mother’s Day I got … Continue reading
Cesario’s is in San Francisco, located just North-East of Union Square. It’s a traditional Italian restaurant and I assume they get a fair share of their business from people going to the theatres nearby. The interior is cozy, with closely spaced tables, and the atmosphere is nice. Our servers were very … Continue reading
It’s finally time to finish up my posts from my trip to California this fall. After visiting Napa, Sonoma, and Monterey, the last leg of our trip took us to San Francisco. We drove up to the city, dropped the car off and made our way to the hotel. We … Continue reading
With my recent move, I haven’t had a lot of time for creative cooking over the past few weeks and have been eating take-out more often than not. So I’ve been living vicariously through other cooking blogs. Here are some spring themed recipes I’ve saved that I’d like to try soon. … Continue reading
And then there were two. We’ve reached the finale where Eric Chong, the chemical engineer from Oakville, faces off against Marida Mohammed, a personal trainer from Toronto, with one final meal. Before we get to the cooking, we get to see all the eliminated contestants, the families of the final two … Continue reading
